Come Together                            Lent

The Arts and Spiritual Transformation: this is our Lenten theme. How does the Spirit move in your experience of the arts?  With pleasure? Trepidation? Awe? Change?
“They keep stable the fabric of the world and their prayer is in the practice of their trade.” (Sirach 38:34)
How can you be part of this? Come and talk to the ministers about showing your artwork as part of one of the Sundays; volunteer to be part of the worship leadership one week; talk to your friends who are artists; let us know about a member of the congregation whose work we might offer as a spiritual experience. Let our ideas
come together.  Here is the outline:

March 13 Spiritual transformation through wood and sculpture
March 20 Spiritual transformation through visual art: painting, photography, glass
March 27 Spiritual transformation through Instrumental music and song
April 3 Spiritual transformation through cloth and fabric

April 10 Spiritual transformation through architecture
April 17    Palm Sunday Spiritual transformation through writing
April 21 Maundy Thursday - Upper Room Worship Spiritual transformation through fire and clay
April 22 Good Friday

The Garneau Bread Run: an Opportunity for Generosity
The Bread Run operates every Saturday morning from 9-10:30 at Garneau United Church. People in need, referred from the food bank can drop in to pick up bread and other baked goods, canned goods and occasionally produce. Donations are solicited from local bakeries and grocery stores.
Since September regular use has increased from 12 families to about 20 with other folks dropping in one time only or occasionally. We anticipate that this need will increase given the deteriorating economy.
A bin for donations of canned goods and other non-perishable items will be placed in the Friendship Room each Sunday. Volunteers from St. Paul's who are involved with the Bread Run will monitor the donated goods. They will be distributed on the third Saturday of every month.
Please take this opportunity to develop the spiritual practice of generosity by contributing. Those who depend on the Garneau Bread Run will thank you!

Gifts of Securities
A Win-Win for You and St. Paul’s United.
A gift of securities is an easy and effective way to support St. Paul’s.  If you donate publicly listed securities, be they stocks, bonds or mutual funds, you will pay no tax on the capital gains on those securities.  You will also receive a charitable tax receipt for the full value of the securities donated.  While supporting our church, this can also generate a significant tax credit for you.
For example, a recent donor of BCE shares valued at $5,000.00 estimated she saved over $1,000 in tax on the capital gains, and in turn received a tax receipt for the full value of those shares that will generate even more savings on her next income tax return.
Our  United Church Gift Planner Kathryn Hofley would be happy to assist you and can be reached at:  (204) 943-4844, khofley@united-church.ca or The United Church of Canada Foundation at 1-866-340-8223 or 416-231-7680, ext. 3011. They will provide you with the easy to complete forms you need to enable your gift.

WONDERCAFE.CA is the public face of the United Church of Canada’s Emerging Spirit Campaign.  It is designed to get conversation going for people between 30 and 45 with little or no spiritual background and connections. Research has shown that this group’s values and questions about life tend to be close to those of our church.
wondercafe.ca tries hard to break through their impression of us as humourless and judgmental. Does it succeed?    The website welcomes all responses.  For further information on this initiative, please help yourself to a handout entitled: Answers to Questions About the Emerging Spirit Campaign available on the library table.  Check it out for yourself!
