* Interesting note from the Observer
After checking, double-checking, then
checking some more, we are now certain that
The United Church Observer is not only the
oldest continuously published magazine in
Canada - our roots go back to 1829 - but is
the oldest continuously published magazine in
North America! We predate The Scientific
American by 16 years and Harper’s by 21. And
as best we can tell, we are the second-oldest
magazine in the English-speaking world. The
top honour goes to Britain’s Spectator
magazine, which has been around since the
early 1700s and published continuously since
1828, a scant year before we came on the
scene. Our origins date back to the first
half of the 19th century, when Canadian
Methodists decided to found a weekly
newspaper, The Christian Guardian edited by
Rev. Egerton Ryerson. When Canadian
Methodists, Congregationalists and most
Presbyterians merged into The United Church of
Canada in 1925, the three denominational
newspapers also joined forces as The New
Outlook. The publication became The United
Church Observer in 1939.

Wondering about wondercafe.ca?
wondercafe.ca
is the public face of the United Church of Canada’s Emerging Spirit
Campaign.
It is designed to get conversation going for people between 30 and 45 with
little or no spiritual background and connections. Research has shown that
this group’s values and questions about life tend to be close to those of our
church.
wondercafe.ca
tries hard to break through their impression of us as humourless and
judgmental.
